Recently a co-worker made a comment at the end of a conversation. “…you gotta live for Tuesday,” she said.

I stopped, looked up at her inquisitively, and asked, “What do you mean by that?”

“Everyone seems to live for the weekend, why not live for Tuesday?” she said.  “Why do we have to wait until the weekend to do the things that we love?”

“Hmmmm…. good question,” I said as I contemplated this statement.

Okay, sure, on occasion I have been told to “loosen up” or “live in the moment”.  Usually this statement is thrown my way at the time of evening when I just want to wind down, go to bed, and put the day behind me.  And truthfully, I feel that I can justify my often very vanilla decisions based on being forty-something with a husband, two daughters, a dog and a demanding career.

But seriously, couldn’t we all stand to live a little more for Tuesdays?

Why not color outside of the lines and inject a little color into life during the week?

I recently decided to try this theory.  On the weekend I committed that I would do my pottery on Tuesday evening instead of waiting until some down time the following weekend.  Okay, I know you are thinking “whoa…settle down wild child” but seriously, time on my pottery wheel transports me to a calming place.  And since I have only had the wheel for a couple months, the novelty still exists since time on it is seldom.

That Tuesday evening as we finished dinner dishes, I looked up at the clock which read 7:45pm.  Ugh – if I start now it will be late by the time I play around and then clean up.  The inner dialogue was pulling me towards working on the philosophy course that I am taking, but my heart was screaming to do some pottery.

So I did it.  I sat down at the pottery wheel, played around for 45 minutes and during clean-up I felt relaxed for having taken the time for a creative outlet.

Okay – it’s not like going for a sunset horse ride, escaping to the theatre to see a new release, walking along the river with an ice cream cone, or taking a spontaneous drive to the mountains, but it was a little escape from the weekday hamster wheel.

Those little things that can inject a little spark into our lives do not have to wait until the weekend.  We tend to gravitate towards what is comfortable and routine is comfortable. Would we be happier if we lived for Tuesday, Wednesday or even Thursday? A question I will continue to explore.

And I challenge you to color outside the lines and live for weekdays not only the weekend.
